ABOUT GAUNTLET
Gauntlet was developed and released by Atari Games in 1985. Designed by Ed Logg, the fantasy-themed action game allowed as many as four players to play simultaneously, choosing from four distinctive heroes: Thor the Warrior, Thyra the Valkyrie, Merlin the Wizard, and Questor the Elf. Players explored maze-like dungeons while battling ghosts, demons, sorcerers, and other enemies, collecting treasure, food, keys, and magic potions along the way.The large four-player cabinet and cooperative gameplay helped make Gauntlet a standout in crowded arcades. It was also famous for its synthesized voice announcements, including warnings about low health and memorable messages such as a particular player “needs food badly.”
ARCADE TRIVIA: Gauntlet was designed to keep several players involved—and feeding quarters into the machine—at the same time. Players' health continually decreased even when they weren't being attacked, while additional coins could be inserted to increase health. Combined with four-player cooperative action, this made Gauntlet both an innovative social gaming experience and a remarkably effective coin-operated arcade machine.
