ABOUT ARCADE TOKEN MACHINES
For generations of arcade-goers, the first stop wasn't always the newest game—it was the token machine. Players inserted paper money and received a supply of metal tokens that could then be used throughout the arcade. The familiar sound of tokens dropping into the metal tray was often the unofficial beginning of an afternoon at the arcade.
Arcade operators benefited from tokens because they kept money within the business, simplified coin handling, and allowed an arcade to issue its own custom currency. Tokens could also become miniature advertisements, often stamped with the arcade's name, logo, or location.
ARCADE TRIVIA: Arcade tokens weren't always worth the same as the quarter they replaced. Arcades could offer promotions such as five tokens for a dollar or provide bonus tokens with larger purchases. Once you exchanged your cash, however, those tokens were generally useful only at that arcade—giving you a pretty good reason to come back and use the ones still rattling around in your pocket!
