ABOUT TRON
TRON was developed and released by Bally Midway in 1982 as a tie-in to Disney's groundbreaking science-fiction film of the same year. Rather than featuring a single style of gameplay, the arcade game included four different challenges inspired by the world of the film: Light Cycles, Grid Bugs, the MCP Cone, and a battle against tanks.
The original cabinet was almost as memorable as the game itself. Its elaborate black-light artwork, glowing fluorescent graphics, illuminated controls, distinctive blue joystick, and spinner control were designed to evoke the neon-lit digital world of the movie, making TRON one of the most recognizable arcade cabinets of its era.
ARCADE TRIVIA: In an unusual reversal for a movie tie-in, the TRON arcade game became a bigger commercial success than the film that inspired it. The game reportedly earned more money during its initial arcade run than the movie earned at the domestic box office. Even more remarkably, the arcade game had to be developed while the movie itself was still being completed, so its designers worked from preliminary information rather than simply recreating a finished film.
