ABOUT STAR WARS
Star Wars was developed and released by Atari in 1983, placing players in the cockpit of an X-wing during the climactic attack on the Death Star from the original 1977 film. Using a distinctive flight yoke, players battled TIE fighters, skimmed across the Death Star's surface, and finally raced through the trench to fire proton torpedoes at the exhaust port.
The game used Atari's color vector graphics, producing bright, sharply defined lines against a black background that were particularly effective at recreating the look of targeting computers and space combat. The game also incorporated digitized dialogue and sound effects from the film, further immersing players in the Star Wars universe.
ARCADE TRIVIA: Atari's Star Wars was released six years after the original movie, yet became one of the most celebrated Star Wars video games ever produced. Its Death Star trench sequence was inspired by the film's famous finale, giving arcade players something extraordinary for 1983—the opportunity to actually sit at the controls of an X-wing and personally make the attack run they had watched Luke Skywalker perform on the big screen.
