ABOUT SPACE INVADERS
Space Invaders was created by Tomohiro Nishikado and released by Taito in Japan in 1978, with Midway licensing the game for North America. Players defend the bottom of the screen against rows of descending aliens, using movable barriers for protection as the invaders steadily increase their speed.
The cocktail cabinet placed the monitor beneath a glass tabletop, allowing players to sit while playing and making the machine particularly well suited to restaurants, bars, lounges, and other social settings. Tabletop arcade cabinets became a memorable alternative to the traditional upright machines found throughout the arcade era.
ARCADE TRIVIA: The invaders weren't originally intended to speed up as the game progressed. The arcade hardware could draw the screen more quickly as players eliminated enemies and fewer objects remained to process. Nishikado recognized that this technical limitation actually made the game more exciting and kept the increasing speed as part of the gameplay. The resulting tension became one of Space Invaders' defining features and helped make it one of the most influential arcade games ever created.
