ABOUT GALAXIAN
Galaxian was developed and released by Namco in 1979, with Midway distributing the game in North America. Building on the popularity of space shooters such as Space Invaders, Galaxian introduced more aggressive enemies that broke away from their formation and dive-bombed the player's ship, creating a faster and more dynamic style of gameplay.
Galaxian was also technologically significant for its colorful presentation. At a time when many arcade games still relied on monochrome displays or colored overlays, Galaxian used true RGB color graphics, helping demonstrate what the next generation of arcade hardware could deliver.
ARCADE TRIVIA: Galaxian directly paved the way for Galaga, released by Namco in 1981. Galaga retained the basic concept of alien formations and diving attacks while adding features such as tractor beams, captured fighters, Dual Fighters, and bonus stages. The two games became enduring arcade classics and helped establish one of Namco's most recognizable series.
