ABOUT GALAGA
Galaga was developed and released by Namco in 1981, with Midway distributing the game in North America. Created as a successor to 1979's Galaxian, Galaga expanded the fixed-shooter formula with more complex enemy formations, bonus stages, and the famous tractor-beam mechanic that could capture the player's fighter.
The cocktail or table-style cabinet offered a very different arcade experience from the familiar upright machine. Players sat across from one another with the monitor mounted beneath the tabletop. In two-player games, the image rotated to face the active player, making cocktail cabinets especially well suited to restaurants, bars, lounges, and other locations where the machine could double as a table.
ARCADE TRIVIA: One of Galaga's signature strategies involves deliberately allowing a Boss Galaga to capture your fighter with its tractor beam. If you later destroy the captor without destroying your captured ship, the fighter can be rescued and joined to your current ship, creating the powerful Dual Fighter with twice the firepower—but also twice the width and a larger target for enemies.
