ABOUT FROGGER
Frogger was developed by Konami and released in 1981, with Sega/Gremlin licensing and releasing the game in the United States. Its simple but challenging premise tasked players with guiding frogs across a busy highway and then across a dangerous river using moving logs and turtles to reach five safe homes.
Unlike many popular arcade games of the era, Frogger had no fire button and no shooting—the original cabinet used only a four-direction joystick. Its colorful graphics, distinctive sounds, and easy-to-understand gameplay helped make it an arcade favorite and led to versions for numerous home gaming systems.
ARCADE TRIVIA: Frogger became firmly embedded in pop culture long after its arcade debut. One of its most memorable appearances came in the 1998 Seinfeld episode “The Frogger,” in which George Costanza attempts to preserve a Frogger machine containing his decades-old high score.
