ABOUT DONKEY KONG
Donkey Kong was released by Nintendo in 1981 and designed by Shigeru Miyamoto, who would go on to become one of the most influential figures in video game history. Players guide a carpenter originally known as Jumpman up a series of platforms and ladders while dodging barrels and other obstacles to rescue Pauline from Donkey Kong. Jumpman, of course, would soon become known as Mario.
The game was created partly out of necessity. Nintendo's earlier arcade game Radar Scope had performed poorly in the United States, leaving the company with a large number of unsold machines. Miyamoto was tasked with developing a new game that could make use of the existing hardware, and Donkey Kong became a major success.
ARCADE TRIVIA: Donkey Kong was originally conceived around Popeye, Olive Oyl, and Bluto, but when Nintendo could not secure the necessary license, Miyamoto developed new characters instead. That change ultimately gave the world Donkey Kong, Pauline, and Mario—and helped launch one of the most important franchises in video game history.
