ABOUT DIG DUG
Dig Dug was released in 1982, designed and engineered by Namco and manufactured under license by Atari for the U.S. arcade market. Players control the underground hero Dig Dug as he tunnels through the earth, defeating the red, goggle-wearing Pookas and fire-breathing Fygars by inflating them with an air pump or crushing them with falling rocks.
One of the game's clever innovations was that there was no fixed maze. Instead, players created their own pathways by digging through the dirt, making the environment itself part of the game's strategy. The original cabinet used a four-way joystick and a single pump button.
ARCADE TRIVIA: Atari gave Dig Dug an unusually ambitious promotional campaign for an arcade game, including a short Dig Dug movie advertisement shown in theaters nationwide during the summer of 1982. The promotional film later received recognition from the CLIO Awards.
