ABOUT CENTIPEDE
Centipede was released by Atari in 1981 and was co-designed by Ed Logg and Dona Bailey. Players used the cabinet's distinctive trackball and fire button to battle a descending centipede while avoiding spiders, fleas, and scorpions moving through a colorful field of mushrooms.
With its bright pastel graphics and fast-paced gameplay, Centipede became one of the most commercially successful arcade games of its era. It was also notable for attracting a significant female player base, something relatively uncommon among arcade games at the time.
ARCADE TRIVIA: Centipede holds an important place in video game history as one of the earliest major arcade games co-designed by a woman. Dona Bailey was one of the industry's pioneering female game designers, and her collaboration with Ed Logg helped create one of Atari's most recognizable arcade classics. Centipede was inducted into The Strong's World Video Game Hall of Fame in 2020.
